Keep calm and travel on

England is drifting, deliberately setting itself apart from the rest of Europe, yet the country is tethered to the continent by history, culture and commerce. The cause of their isolationism — a reaction to the changes brought about by immigration — should not be perceived as a threat, but as an asset, as they are actually making England stronger in the long-term, as the changing face of my hometown, Croydon, may one day prove. I hope that Brexit will fail and that England will remain a driving force in Europe. The time we spent criss-crossing the continent was a powerful reminder that we all have to adapt if we want to survive and thrive in the future.

The changing face of Belgium

Visiting Belgium is always a mixed experience. On the one hand, we have friends and family living there, but, on the other, much of the past has disappeared. Today's Brussels is much more international than it used to be. There is also an unbelievable amount of new construction taking place, as well as renovations and conversions of old buildings. Sometimes it's hard to recognize my old hometown, which makes me sad, but then it's reassuring to see Brussels becoming the city it always deserved to be, instead of a well-kept secret.

Life in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is one of those places that you've heard of, but, chances are, you've never visited. It's most famous for being a tiny country and for being a banking haven for the rich. While it is both small in size--it is after all a city state--and rich in assets, it is well worth exploring. We spent an afternoon there on our way from Dusseldorf to visit a close friend living in southeastern Belgium. We arrived by train, thoroughly charmed by the countryside we saw along the way. When we arrived in Luxembourg, we were glad to store our luggage and walk around for a few hours, with the weather gods on our side.
