Packing up my life

“How do you pack for 8 months?” This is the question I heard the most after announcing that we were both leaving our jobs and putting our belongings into storage to go roam the earth for eight months. To us Americans, who like our “stuff”, the mere thought of only traveling with a couple of small bags is enough to cause a mini anxiety attack. I’m going to be honest- this is one of the things that appealed to me most about setting out to travel- minimizing.

Travel as a cure for modern life

Earlier this month, I stepped away from a respectable position at a reputable organization in the nonprofit sector. After twelve years of passionate, mission-driven work, I decided the time had come for a break. You might call it a “mid-career retirement”: I needed to take my foot off the gas and look after myself for a change. As a sector, we are notorious for caring for others, often neglecting our own lives and burning out repeatedly in the process. Professional passion can take you only so far before it consumes you, which is a disservice to you and your employer.

First Step

We’re taking the next few months off, before making our next career move. Call it a sabbatical or mid-career retirement. We’re packing up our home, saying goodbye to our cats and heading off on a round-the-world trip in early September.
